Jake Mayock
I am Jake and I’m one of the founders of 8020 Media and 8020 Automotive. I grew up in Sugar Land, TX and received a Bachelor’s degree in Finance from Texas Christian University (TCU). My current residence is Charleston, SC following a brief stint in Denver, CO shortly after college. I spent a few years working in Private Equity and Investment Banking while building and contributing to 8020 Automotive.
My passion for cars and engines began when I turned 16 and got my first car – a 2008 Mazda RX-8. I now own a very eclectic variety of vehicles including a 2002 F-350 dually, 2008 BMW 135i, and 1992 Mazda Miata.
Ever since my first car, I’ve always had a passion for repairing, maintaining, and modifying my own cars. I began with little experience but spent countless hours learning the ins and outs of the automotive world and internal combustion engines. Early on, it began with some simple YouTube videos and many mistakes along the way. I’ve since spent time learning about performance part development, tuning, and advanced modifications via courses from High Performance Academy.
Ultimately, my experience began with barely knowing how to do an oil change or drive a car onto ramps. I’ve since done everything from basic maintenance to advanced repairs and single turbo swaps. This hands-on experience and knowledge allows me to craft in-depth, informative articles to help others succeed in their car projects.
Since founding 8020 Media, I have contributed to virtually every aspect of the business. I build, design, and maintain all of our websites, manage the accounting and financials, and handle many administrative tasks. Additionally, I am an integral part of our wealth of automotive knowledge and skill having written over 200 articles, designing and developing performance parts (primarily for diesel trucks), and working with numerous performance brands to deliver high-quality information and top-tier products.
My Current Project

Single Turbo 135i N54
Power Goals: 700-750whp
I’ve owned this 135i since 2017. It only had 32k miles when I bought it and it currently only has 65k miles. It mostly sat with bolt-on modifications at first as I was waiting to do a big single turbo build and the time has finally come.
Build List:
-Speedtech Top Mount Kit with VS Racing 44mm/open dump
-Precision 6266 Turbo (Gen 2 ball bearing)
-Phoenix Racing Port Injection Manifold
-Fuel-It 750cc PI Injectors
-JB4 PI Controller
-Precision Raceworks Stage 3 LPFP
-VRSF 7.5 FMIC
-RB PCV Valve
-3.5 Bar TMAP Sensor

1992 Miata 1.6L
Platform: bone stock 1.6L, impressive 116hp
Power Goals: turbo? LS swap?
Purpose: Weekend Track Warrior
I bought this Miata at the same time Zach bought his E30. The plan is to do a track build-off where we ultimately pit me in the Miata against Zach in the E30 and see who wins. He cheated and bought an E30 that is engine swapped so I’m thinking this thing needs a turbo or a swap. Unfortunately the 1.6L isn’t the most power capable platform, so it might need a 1.8 swap, or should we go crazy and LS swap it?
The Miata was bone stock but I’ve since done a front Wilwood big brake kit, track-spec coilovers, and front and rear swaybars, lightweight wheels and tires, in addition to a few Miata tall people mods!
